We have received calls since the Kansas City Star ran its article about the City of Kansas City removing trees in preparation of the arrival of this ash tree killer. The EAB can destroy ash trees but there are treatments for it as well. Prevention is the best with a systemic tree treatments. Treatment is not as effective post infestation.
The Emerald Ash Borer kills ash trees within three to five years of infestation. Adults are dark metallic green, 1/2 inch in length and 1/8 inch wide, and fly only from mid-May to September. Larvae spend the rest of the year developing beneath the bark. The EAB migrated here from Asia and has been destructive to native ash trees here in America. The EAB was discovered in Missouri on July 23, 2008 in Eastern Missouri. The EAB has now been found in Platte County, Missouri. Home owners need to begin understanding the treat to their property and trees.
Here is a great link on good information about the EAB from the Missouri Department of Conservation.
